Did you realize that dogs engage with their toys in much the same manner as wolves do with their prey? Indeed, that’s accurate, and this might be the reason why dogs show a preference for certain toys over others, particularly those with appealing tastes, scents, or toys that can be easily dismantled.

The story of Theo mirrors that of many senior dogs who find themselves abandoned in the heart of bustling urban streets. Theo, specifically, was discovered in the parking lot of a well-known retail chain store in Barrington, Illinois, USA. He was swiftly taken to the BAARK Dog Rescue shelter for care.

Upon arrival at the shelter, rescuers reached out to Jenny Leech, a caregiver who didn’t hesitate to welcome the 12-year-old dog into her home, despite already caring for 11 other furry companions.

“I’m involved in several rescues, and I have a soft spot for senior and special needs dogs. We already have 11, including three requiring hospice care. Theo fits right in. He’s quirky but amusing. My pack is always very accepting of newcomers,” Jenny expressed with delight.

Once settled in, Jenny allowed Theo to select his favorite toy from a diverse assortment. Surprisingly, Theo dashed towards a stuffed blue octopus, clutching it in his snout. From that point on, Theo was inseparable from his tentacled companion. Whether in sunlight or shade, he carried it everywhere.

This endearing encounter with his cherished toy occurred at a dog salon where Jenny paused to purchase a badge necklace and other essentials. However, Theo’s attention was solely captivated by the stuffed octopus.

“While we were waiting for the engraving, he sniffed around the toy bin and chose the octopus. It must have been love at first sight,” Jenny recounted.

The joy that Theo derived from his toy was so evident that Jenny halted the car on the roadside to observe. His excitement and happiness were palpable, not just due to his loving new family, but also his newfound blue friend.

Theo’s owner shared videos of her dog’s fixation with the stuffed animal on social media. In response, the Live Like Roo foundation sent a box containing 10 more toys, deeply touched by Theo’s attachment to the octopus.

Upon opening the box filled with blue octopuses, Theo’s emotional response was evident—a radiant glow illuminated his face, expressing immense tenderness; his expression was simply heartwarming.

Jenny acknowledges that she doesn’t know how much longer she’ll have the privilege of Theo’s affection and unconditional love, but what’s certain is that the little blue octopus has brought her aging companion a great deal of happiness.
