The story of the Old Lady, a 10-year-old St. Bernard, has captured the hearts of animal lovers around the world. Her journey began when she was rescued from a puppy mill, where she had been kept in appalling conditions and forced to give birth to litter after litter of highly sought-after puppies. When she proved useless to the breeder, she was rescued by Ruff Start Rescue, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping animals in need.
The Old Lady arrived at Ruff Start Rescue with extensive bald patches and was so shy that she trembled at the slightest movement. Her case was extremely neglected, and it was clear that she had a long road to recovery ahead of her. When she was taken for a walk on the sidewalk, the sound of the snow crunching frightened her so much that she ran away, dragging her leash and disappearing into the forest.
After 17 days of sporadic sightings, bitter cold, and numerous attempts to lure her with humane live traps, the Old Lady was found tangled in a branch, hiding in the dense forest of the St. Bernard Wildlife Sanctuary. After hours of intense rescue efforts, the Old Lady was freed from the tangled leash and brought back to the safety of Ruff Start Rescue.
Despite the media attention and the outpouring of love and support from around the world, the Old Lady’s story is not as beautiful as it may seem. The process of rehabilitating a neglected animal is a long one, both for the animal and the person. Survivors of puppy mills are often scarred both physically and emotionally, and the Old Lady is sadly no exception.
